Forensic Science Presentation

This morning we had two detectives, Kate and Gavin who came to talk to us about Forensic Science. They told us about: DNA - fingerprints, hair, footprints. Luminol, Firearms. With the DNA they use swabs and then they send it away to get it analysed. With Luminol they can see things that they wouldn't always be able to see.

Materials Technolgy

This is the design process what I did in Materials Technology.

Melvin the saddish robot

Melvin the sad-ish robot

Melvin can’t write so I am writing about him, as I am his Amazing toaster dog. His language is quite different, apparently it is called  cacadilliouses. Melvin fell out of a UFO because it was broken, but he just likes to say that it landed in my backyard when technically it crashed into it. My owners got so scared they ran out of our shed and never came back, which is good because I hated them.

He was created by the underground headquarters of Unicorns but he got fired from them because he dropped this lollipop or something, I don’t see why they could've just bought another one. I think this is why he is always sad, and I gave him 20c to spend but he never does spend it, not even when the new chocolate bar came out.

He is 14 years old, none of us knew how old he was so we just made it 14. He always carries this weird brown bag with the 20c I gave him and a fold out umbrella, not like it will ever rain in this land. He seems to enjoy climbing the tree out the front garden and he always cries whenever he sees the broken UFO, which I understand,  it probably gives him bad memories.

He always loses his yellow shoes. And we are both too poor to buy him more.

He got suspended from school for breaking someone’s nose, he was supposed to go back 4 weeks and 3 days ago but I think he just ditches, I don’t mind because I ditched dog school too. I just wonder where he might go. His favourite food is candyfloss, like mine. He is trying to change his name to Chocolate Fish, although I think he should change his name to gumball, (gum for short) if  he was going to change it at all.

Today Chocolate Fish asked me when his  birthday was. I didn’t know what to say because I’ve never had a birthday and neither has he. So we made it today. I asked him what he wanted and he said candyfloss, (of course). Also I am calling him Chocolate Fish for 6 ¼ years, he said until I die but I said I might forget. We had candyfloss for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then we got sick of it so we had marshmallows for dessert.

Last night, Chocolate Fish and I slept in the tree out the front. Well he did but after 102 seconds I had to go back in the shed 'cos we thought the branches would snap.

Chocolate fish walked into school today, but he came running back out because there were purple balloons in the book room and he thought they were all having a party without him. So we had a picnic in the middle of the roundabout on our street except it wasn’t really a picnic because  we   had  no food. It was just a foodless picnic.

Chocolate Fish always says he has a twin brother called Melvin, I don’t know how true that is. He misses him, although he hardly remembers him.

Rata & the Totara

Rata & the Totara

Rata’s Mother told him that she had seen a magnificent totara tree, Rata knew what this meant, he had to go to seek answers about his father's murder. Early in the morning Rata found the totara tree his mother had told him about. He forgot to ask permission ( Tikanga ) and picked up his stone adze and started to chop down the tree.  By the end of the day the tree was nearly down, with one last strike the tree came down. He was so tired he decided to leave for the day and do the carving tomorrow. As soon as Rata had left the birds and insects rushed to see the damage, they decided to put the tree back together, Several hours later the tree stood tall, with everything back in place. The tree shook i back in place. When Rata comes back the next day saw the tree standing tall again, he felt angry and again he began to chop down the tree. Again the birds and insects come out and fix it, this happens 1 more time. He was so furious he grabbed fantail and asked for an explanation, fantail explained that he forgot to ask for permission, Rata was instantly shamed he knew he was wrong and sorry.  The tree shook it was now giving Rata permission to use the tree, the birds told Rata to go home and they would finish the waka for him. This time when Rata returned the next day he found a beautifully carved waka. He gave  thanks to Tanemahuta again and set off on his quest.

Flying Fox

I’ll never forget the time when I thought I was about to fall off the wooden platform because my legs were shaking so much. Suddenly the flying fox wasn’t tied to the platform anymore, it slowly went down the hill until I hit something I blinked and I was down in seconds. The wind was so strong that I could hardly walk up the hill let alone run. Finally after several times of me slipping I made it up. I thought I would never be able to do it and now I wanted to go down it 100 more times. I watched and waited as my friends had their turns some of them screamed and some laughed. After everyone had a turn we persuaded my teacher to go on, she shouted from the end “I did it.” She must of liked it because she went down again.

It got more boring every time we had another turn, soon after I stopped going down because my head was so dizzy, The cold air blew the trees which made the leaves blow into my face. It started pouring down and everyone ran to get their rain jackets I forgot mine I was soaked from head to toe, but then luckily someone had two. I put it on and it made me feel a lot warmer. I sprinted back to the camp and we all had a hot chocolate in front of the fire.

Haunted House

                               Haunted House

WALT: To use a variation of long and short sentences

The rickety chair sat alone on the dusty porch. Even in the daytime the house looked sinister. There wasn’t really a proper garden just a bunch of droopy roses struggling to grow, and an old swing covered in ivy. There was no door, only a slim gap in the middle of a wall, that I only just could squeeze through. I tiptoed in, the broken floorboards creaked and then one snapped. I screamed so loud I thought the house would break down. The noise echoed through the hallway and I swear I just saw a shadow of someone. I continued walking into the kitchen and in there was only one squeaky cupboard filled with nothing but cobwebs and a couple of mice nibbling on a mouldy piece of bread. The lounge wasn’t really a lounge, it had an ancient moth-eaten couch and an old-fashioned mat. I decided to look upstairs to see if that was any better. I stepped up to the unsturdy stairs they groaned every step I took, I wished I had a sweater. My fingers turned blue just looking at this place.  The state of the room upstairs made me shiver. The window was smashed and the tiny shards of glass that was still on the floor were needle like, I wouldn't want to walk in there with barefeet I thought aloud.

My heart was racing, I thought I was about to have a heart-attack. Someone was there, alive. I hid behind the door, I got to get out of here and fast. I couldn’t jump out the window, it was too high and I would probably break my neck or even die. There was no way I would be able to get down the stairs without them seeing me. Suddenly I felt a cold hand rest on my shoulder, I didn’t dare to turn around. The lights went out I also had a pain in my chest like never before.

Banded Kokopu

Banded Kokopu

The Banded Kokopu is very interesting and has lots of unusual features about it.

The Banded Kokopu usually grows up to 20 - 25cm but has been recorded at 30 cm long they also are very good climbers. They live in the pool area of a catchment.

They spend the first 3 - 4 months at sea before migrating back to fresh water as whitebait. They breathe by swallowing water and pumping it over their gills. The Banded Kokopu mostly feed on invertebrates that live in the stream bends but they also eat insects that fall into the water.

The Banded Kokopu has been affected by people pouring sewage into the water they are also affected by deforestation and humans destroying their lakes and homes to build over.
We could protect its habitat and stop destroying them.

I think that the Banded Kokopu is a amazing, Interesting and unusual creature.

The water cycle

The water cycle

The sun collects the water from puddles, streams, sea… and that is called evaporation then it goes into the clouds which is called condensation finally Precipitation happens when it rains, snows, sleet or hail and then it starts all over again.  Here is a diagram of the water cycle:
Image result for the water cycle

The water cycle also known as hydrologic cycle is the journey water takes as it circulates from the land to the sky and back again. The Sun's heat provides energy to evaporate water from the Earth's surface (oceans, lakes, … ). Plants also lose water to the air this is called transpiration.

97% of our water isn’t fresh, that means only 3% is.
